Joshua Tromans - Pianist and 2019 Rising Star
Joshua started piano lessons at the very young age of three and has not looked back. He has performed in masterclasses for some of the best contemporary world class pianists and educators today such as Yefim Bronfman, Emanuel Ax, and Louis Lortie. When he was seven years old, Joshua was featured as a piano prodigy on the CBC Radio One popular show "The Early Edition". He received his ARCT in Piano Performance at the age of ten and his Grade 10 at the age of eight, earning First Class Honours with Distinction. In 2015, Joshua was honoured to be Lang Lang's duet partner in the "101 Pianists" event in Vancouver. At age twelve, Joshua made his debut with the VSO at the Orpheum theatre, as the winner of the "Future of Excellence Competition" (Junior Division), where he performed Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor, and received an overwhelming standing ovation. He is consistently awarded top prizes and awards in Music Festivals and competitions and regularly performs in gala concerts. Last summer, Joshua was selected to represent the Vancouver Kiwanis Music Festival (senior piano) in the Performing Arts BC "Provincial Festival 2018" in Victoria.

Joshua will be performing the first movement of Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No.3 in C Major, Op.26. Although this concerto did not arouse much enthusiasm when first performed by Prokofiev himself in Chicago, it went on to become one of the most popular piano concertos of the first half of the 20th century. This concerto is challenging for both the listener and the performer and, as Joshua noted, “certain sections need to be played very fast with clear articulation. I overcame this challenge by playing slowly and gradually increasing speed without losing control.”
One might say that Joshua is already a seasoned performer, but as he is always looking to advance in his musical vocation he sees this opportunity to perform with the Richmond Orchestra as a “valuable experience that will help me grow as a musician and gain in performance experience. It will help solidify my understanding of what is required of me in order to become a solid performing artist.”

She has been playing in the VAM Symphony Orchestra for three years, and has also been part of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra Sinfonietta and the Vancouver Youth Symphony Orchestra as a cellist. Premiered in Leipzig on March 13, 1845 and composed at the height of Mendelssohn’s brilliant career, this violin concerto became an instant classic. Alice realized that the most challenging part of the concerto for her was “finding the right colour and tones for each section.” She spent many hours listening to recordings of the piece to understand what others have done with Mendelssohn’s masterpiece and eventually was able to weave together what she heard to “make her own tone”. Alice is definitely a musician who wants to learn from others. As she rehearses and performs with the Richmond Orchestra she says she is looking forward to “understanding how other people look at this music and how they play so I can collaborate with the whole orchestra”. Alice considers one of her biggest musical accomplishments, to date, was winning the Richmond Music Festival and now is thrilled to have the opportunity to play with the Richmond Orchestra. Having never played a concerto with an orchestra before, she is eagerly looking forward to this experience.

Hsin Lin Alice Lee - Violin
Joshua Tromans - Piano
Nathan Kwok - Cello

Announcing our 2019 Rising Stars!
The Richmond Orchestra and Chorus Association is celebrating the 10th Anniversary of this remarkable concert which gives young musicians the opportunity to rehearse and perform with a full orchestra and a professional conductor. Hsin Lin Alice Lee, Joshua Tromans and Nathan Kwok are all winners in their concerto category at the recent Richmond Music Festival.
Announcing our 2019 Rising Stars!
“Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do.” So said the great Brazilian soccer star Pele, and his message is just as important in the world of music as in the world of sport.
Violinist Hsin Lin Alice Lee, pianist Joshua Tromans, and cellist Nathan Kwok know very well the value of working hard and persevering. These three young people are this year’s Rising Stars in the Richmond Orchestra and Chorus’ annual Rising Stars Concert to be held at Fraserview Church on Saturday, February 16th, 2019.

Hsin Lin Alice Lee, Joshua Tromans and Nathan Kwok are all winners in their concerto category at the recent Richmond Music Festival.
Hsin Lin Alice Lee - Violin
Hsin Lin Alice Lee will perform the first movement from Felix Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor. This concerto, which took six years to complete, is the last of Mendelssohn’s great orchestral works. Although it follows the traditional concerto form, it also includes many innovative features which were later adopted by many other composers in their own concertos. The concerto was an instant success when it was premiered in Leipzig in 1845. To this day it is considered to be one of the most important violin concertos of all time and is, after all these years, essential repertoire for all aspiring violinists.
Joshua Tromans - Piano
Joshua Tromans will be performing the first movement from Sergei Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in C major. Unlike Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto, Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 was not an instant hit when he first performed it with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1921, although it went on to become the most popular piano concerto of the five which Prokofiev wrote. The concerto is very lively and full of humour and is a good demonstration of Prokofiev's masterful technical skill.
Nathan Kwok - Cello
Nathan Kwok’s chosen piece is the Concerto No. 1 in A minor, by Camille Saint-Saëns. This cello concerto was premiered in Paris in 1873 and marked the start of Saint- Saëns’ growing acceptance by the French musical establishment. This concerto is remarkable in that it does not follow the traditional three movement form of earlier concertos but rather is written as one continuous movement. And unlike the Romantic forebears which saw the soloist almost in competition with the orchestra, Saint-Saëns wrote this concerto with the cellist as an integral part of the orchestral fabric while at the same time providing lots of dramatic flair to allow the solo cellist to shine.
Three talented young musicians playing three beautiful pieces of music! The Rising Stars concert is always a highlight of the Richmond Orchestra and Chorus Association’s season and this year will be no exception. These young people are truly inspiring and this concert will be a great musical experience which will live in the hearts and minds of the audience for a long time to come!

Last week, the Richmond Orchestra and Chorus Association remembered our dear friend and chorister, Audrey Fricker and the generosity of her gift to create a scholarship fund in her name. Last week, the Richmond Orchestra and Chorus Association remembered our dear friend and chorister, Audrey Fricker and the generosity of her gift to create a scholarship fund in her name.
Audrey was born and brought up in Montreal; her foundation in music came through her mother. Audrey loved playing piano, dancing and singing. She was a passionate choral devotee, singing in many choirs, and helping to organize music for young people – particularly at U.Hill School.
Audrey was a proud founding member of Elektra Women’s Choir, and loved to sing at Christ Church Cathedral. She joined the Richmond Chorus in the fall of 1994 and was a steadfast member of the alto section for nearly 20 years. She served on the ROCA Board and regularly opened her home to singers for sectional rehearsals. Even towards the end, when her memory was fading, her choir mates would organize her music for her and enjoy the true sound of her voice.
The Audrey Fricker Scholarship Fund has been created with the help of the Richmond Community Foundation and will benefit students who are members of ROCA pursuing their musical studies.

No matter what your faith, creed or background, song is a part of every celebration and occasion and this is no less true for people of the Jewish tradition. In this concert the Richmond Chorus explores the wealth of Jewish music from the writing of Renaissance composer Salamone Rossi in the early 17th century through to more contemporary works.
The Chorus is joined by mezzo-soprano Fabiana Katz for a performance of the beautiful, and very accessible In the Beginning by Aaron Copland, a telling of the Genesis story of creation. We also explore music outside the synagogue, with Eric Whitacre’s Five Hebrew Love Songs, as well as a variety of music from the folksong tradition, ending with Naomi Shemer’s classic Yershalayim Shel Zahav.

Grant Us Peace
November 4, 2017 at 7:30pm
Richmond Orchestra & Chorus
Fraserview MB Church, Richmond
Two works with deep connections to the cessation of war comprise our fall concert. The Violin Concerto of Erich von Korngold was written following the fall of Nazi Germany. Korngold had been creating film music in Hollywood, and vowed not to write for the classical concert hall until he could do so in freedom. His concerto is full of exuberance, and uses material written for earlier movie scores.
Between the two world wars, Europe was uneasy. The 1914-18 war had been labeled as “the war to end all wars” but it was clear that this was not a peace that would last. The English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams turned to the poetry of American writer Walt Whitman in an appeal against the senselessness of war. Chorus and Orchestra join to present this anguished and beautiful work, Dona Nobis Pacem so particularly appropriate around Remembrance Day.

Rising Stars 2017: Musical Beginnings
Congratulations to our Rising Stars participants! Here are some images of the dress rehearsal and of our Rising Stars all together on stage at the end of an amazing evening of great music and incredible talent!
Since 2009, the Richmond Orchestra has organised an annual “Rising Stars” concert that invites young local musicians the opportunity to rehearse and perform with a full orchestra. Rehearsing with an orchestra, learning how to work with a conductor and orchestra musicians, performing for audiences from the community helps a young performer refine techniques, build social relationships within the music community and experience their music as an art rather than just a skill.
This year we were proud to feature the winners of the Richmond Music Festival Concerto and Composition Challenges as our 2017 Rising Stars:
Austin Ng - Piano
Julie Wu - Piano
Ryan Zhu - Piano
Corina Deng - Violin
Matthieu Foresi - Composer
Bruno Cavalca - Composer

When did you first start composing? Describe your first composition.
My first composition was a classical solo piano piece called “ Halloween Rondo”, which was written at the age of nine.
What were the most challenging aspects of writing your composition? Can you describe your composition?
The most fun and challenging part of writing this piece was to orchestrate it. It was challenging to carefully decide what instruments would work best for each section. I could not really describe my composition. If I could describe it in words, it would lose it’s purpose, which is to speak to the listener through the art of music.
Bruno Cavalca
When did you first start composing? Describe your first composition.
I first started composing when I started learning the violin. I had always listened to music, and my father is a guitarist, so ever since I was little I knew how music worked. I first tried composing when I fell in love with Beethoven’s Symphonies. My first composition was a short, simple piece for the violin, but soon after I started to want to write for groups and ensembles.
What were the most challenging aspects of writing your composition? Can you describe your composition?
This particular composition is an odd one for me because it has no real backstory or purpose, so I had to look for my own inspiration. I simply wrote it because I wanted to write a tango for Brass ensemble (I later wrote the orchestration that will soon be performed in two weeks) I wanted to write something fun, and fiery. The instrumentation is for the full forces of the orchestra, and makes special use of the brass section (As that is what this was originally intended for) You may expect to hear some odd sounds, and passionate themes.

What will you be performing at Rising Stars 2017?
I will be playing the first movement of the Piano Concerto no. 3 in C minor, op. 37 by Ludwig van Beethoven.
What were the most challenging aspects of learning your concerto and why? And how did you overcome them?
This concerto was written in 1800 at a time when he was becoming increasingly aware of his deafness. In my opinion, this music expresses the many emotions which he must have been feeling because of this condition. One of the hardest aspects associated with performing this work is to understand and convey these feelings of anger and frustration as well as uncertainty, humility and hope.
Julie Wu
What will you be performing at Rising Stars 2017?
I will be performing the Chopin Concerto in F minor, 3rd mov.
What were the most challenging aspects of learning your concerto and why? And how did you overcome them?
When I learned it at first, I was unconscious of what the whole movement would sound like and I was curious. After having it practiced for a month, I finally found the beauty of this piece.
Austin Ng
What will you be performing at Rising Stars 2017?
I will be performing Concerto in C Major at Rising Stars 2017.
What were the most challenging aspects of learning your concerto and why?
The most challenging aspects of learning my concerto was perfecting the trills because this was the first time I've ever had to do such long trills. It was super tough! And how did you overcome them? I overcame them by being more patient and by practicing even harder at it.
Corina Deng
What will you be performing at Rising Stars 2017? What were the most challenging aspects of learning your concerto and why? And how did you overcome them?
I will play the first movement of Bruch Violin Concerto No.1. The most challenging part of this piece is how to tell the story, express the feeling through my music, and the fast runs.
