Alice Lee - Violinist and 2019 Rising Star

Multitalented Alice Lee plays violin, cello, piano, viola, harp, and flute. For this Rising Stars concert she will be recreating her 2018 Richmond Music Festival award winning performance of Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor op.64, 1st movement.  Alice has been playing the violin since she was nine and currently studies with Domagoj Ivanovic at the Vancouver Academy of Music (VAM). She has been playing in the VAM Symphony Orchestra for three years, and has also been part of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra Sinfonietta and the Vancouver Youth Symphony Orchestra as a cellist. Alice has won many competitions, such as the Kiwanis Festival, and the Richmond Music Festival where she received the festival’s “most promising junior string player” award. She has received two RCM gold medals for her level ten viola and harp exams.

Premiered in Leipzig on March 13, 1845 and composed at the height of Mendelssohn’s brilliant career, this violin concerto became an instant classic. Alice realized that the most challenging part of the concerto for her was “finding the right colour and tones for each section.” She spent many hours listening to recordings of the piece to understand what others  have done with Mendelssohn’s masterpiece and eventually was able to weave together what she heard to “make her own tone”. Alice is definitely a musician who wants to learn from others. As she rehearses and performs with the Richmond Orchestra she says she is looking forward to “understanding how other people look at this music and how they play so I can collaborate with the whole orchestra”. Alice considers one of her biggest musical accomplishments, to date, was winning the Richmond Music Festival and now is thrilled to  have the opportunity to play with the Richmond Orchestra. Having never played a concerto with an orchestra before, she is eagerly looking forward to this experience.
