Our first concert of the season will feature internationally renowned piano soloist Sasha Starcevich. Sasha has performed around the world in such places as New York’s Carnegie Hall, London’s Wigmore Hall, Moscow’s Tchaikovsky Hall and Windsor Castle. The Richmond Orchestra and Chorus are proud to be performing with Sasha in Beethoven’s wonderful Choral Fantasy, a glorious work which combines orchestra, chorus and piano soloist. Sasha will also perform Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor, perhaps the most popular piano concerto of all time.
Christmas time! A time to embrace and rejoice in the classic music of the past and celebrate the creation of new traditions. For many of you Christmas would not be Christmas without a performance of Handel’s Messiah. The Messiah has been performed continually since its debut in 1742 in various arrangements and contexts all over the world. This year the Richmond Orchestra and Chorus are excited to present the Christmas portions of this great oratorio. Come prepared to join in the magnificent Hallelujah Chorus! Newer Christmas standards will also be featured in this concert. Leroy Anderson’s A Christmas Festival has become a favourite of audiences during the concert season. And of course no Christmas concert is complete without those beloved traditional carols. Come and get into the Christmas mood with us!
The Richmond Orchestra is proud to present its 10th annual Rising Stars concert featuring the winners of the Richmond Music Festival. In this program, emerging musical stars of the future have the opportunity to rehearse and perform with a full orchestra and professional conductor. The talent these four young people display on their instruments is only matched by the artistry and passion with which they perform. A truly unique concert you won’t want to miss!
No matter what your faith, creed or background, song is a part of every celebration and occasion and this is no less true for people of the Jewish tradition. In this concert the Richmond Chorus explores the wealth of Jewish music from the writing of Renaissance composer Salamone Rossi in the early 17th century through to more contemporary works. The Chorus is joined by mezzo-soprano Fabiana Katz for a performance of the beautiful, and very accessible In the Beginning by Aaron Copland, a telling of the Genesis story of creation. We also explore music outside the synagogue, with Eric Whitacre’s Five Hebrew Love Songs, as well as a variety of music from the folksong tradition, ending with Naomi Shemer’s classic Yershalayim Shel Zahav.

The picturesque area of Bohemia comes alive in our spring concert which features music from composers Dvorak and Smetana. Our featured soloist, violinist Nancy DiNovo is back by popular demand and will perform Dvorak’s Violin Concerto, a work full of beautiful melodies inspired by Czech folk songs and dances. Completing the program will be the lively Slavonic Dances by Dvorak as well as Smetana’s most beloved work The Moldau.
Dee Daniels! Once you attend one of Dee’s concerts and hear her amazing and unique combination of jazz, gospel and blues you will always be wanting more! Beloved local singer Dee Daniels has had a very diverse musical career. She has sung with many of the legends of jazz including Benny Green and Toots Thielemans; sung for the King and Queen of Belgium’s 25th Wedding Anniversary, performed in Twyla Tharp’s musical Come Fly Away. She has performed in Africa, Australia, throughout South and North America and all over Europe. Dee has shared the stage with orchestras across the United States and Canada and now the Richmond Orchestra and Chorus are thrilled to be performing with Dee Daniels in this very special concert. This will be an evening not to be missed!
We are thrilled to share an evening with her – the Chorus will offer a gospel-style set of pieces, while the Orchestra backs her up in some of her jazz favourites. This will be an evening not to be missed!
