Our Community Partner on October 26
The story of the Ukrainian Community Society of Ivan Franko began many years ago with the first Ukrainian immigrants who settled in Richmond in the 1920's. These early settlers had a vision to build a hall that would serve as a gathering place for Ukrainian families and the greater community where they could maintain their cherished Ukrainian heritage. In 1937, the settlers completed the building of the first hall "Prosvita" and shortly after, the Society was incorporated as the Ukrainian Community Society of Ivan Franko in honour of Ivan Franko who was a much loved writer, scholar and patriot in Ukraine.
Now 88 years later, the Society continues to be dedicated to preserving and sharing Ukrainian heritage and culture with the community. Currently it offers Ukrainian language classes, a Musical Theatre program, Ukrainian dance classes, monthly Friday Night Suppers, weekly Saturday Sales, a fabulous collection of books in the Library, and a number of social events throughout the year. In the last three years the Society also opened its doors and welcomed many displaced Ukrainians who have fled the war. They have become an integral part of the Society and are actively involved in supporting the cultural programs.
The Ukrainian Community Society of Ivan Franko is grateful to the Richmond community for their involvement and support these past 88 years.
Representatives from Ivan Franko will be at the concert to answer questions, show and tell more about their Society and accept donations if you would like to support their programs.
