This program will feature 17 year old cellist Tate Zawadiuk performing one of the most challenging concertos in the cello repertoire. Tate has performed solo with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, is principal cellist of the Vancouver Youth Symphony and has won first place at the Canadian Music Competition. The death of Joseph Stalin in 1953 allowed for the easing of censorship in the Soviet Union. Shostakovich began to release works that he had been forced to hold back from performance under Stalinist rule. Out of this came some of his best compositions including his Cello Concerto in 1959.
