Richmond Sings! – singing for their supper….
"Our dream is that no child in Richmond will suffer from poverty"
In support of Richmond’s Dream Auction, the members of Richmond Chorus have gathered other singers around themselves to offer an evening of music to help raise funds to support this cause that is dear to the hearts of many Richmond residents. The Dream Auction itself is held in late November, but with this early January concert, three hundred voices are lifted to give them a late musical dessert.
The Chorus, under the direction of Brigid Coult, is joined by
Richmond Singers, directed by Natasha Neufeld
The Choir of Gilmore Park United Church, directed by Miri Lee
South Arm United Church Choir, directed by Ron Stevenson
Junior & Senior divisions of Richmond Youth Honour Choir,
directed by Heidi Epp
Westwind Elementary Grade Two/Three Choir, directed by Elvira Gee
Canada Melody Choir, directed by Li Ying Wang
Richmond Christian School Grade Five Choir, directed by Pat Keopke
Each choir will offer their own selections and then everyone will join in singing what has become a trademark song for Richmond Sings! – John Rutter’s arrangement of “Down By The Riverside”
This is the fifth time Richmond Sings! has taken place, and Richmond Orchestra & Chorus Association takes pride in being able to contribute to the community in this way.

It’s Beginning to Sound a Lot Like Christmas
The Richmond Orchestra has a real treat in store for Richmond residents. They will be presenting three free mini concerts this season and in addition to traditional seasonal favorites, conductor James Malmberg has an extra special “little” gift for everyone. Featured in 2 of the orchestra’s selections is a pint sized musical virtuoso who is destined to melt the hearts of all the mothers and grandmothers in the audience. Described by his mother Clare as a “naughty” boy who is a lover of classical music, 7 year old Spencer Tsai has been playing violin and piano since the ripe age of 5 and is especially fond of studying the scores of beautiful music with Beethoven’s Sonatas being a particular favorite. He can be found watching famous violinists on You Tube and comparing their different interpretations of the same piece to improve his own technique. In addition Spencer loves to compose his own pieces and to date has produced over 40 compositions. It is his dream to be a great composer and it is our fortune to be able to listen to this talented little boy as he starts on that great journey.
The three performances begin with a visit to Lansdowne Shopping Centre on Saturday, December 10th at 2:30pm; a 7:30pm evening concert in partnership with Gilmore Gardens, on Tuesday, December 13th at the Gilmore Park United Church and then a performance on Sunday December 18th at 2:30pm at Aberdeen Centre.
The Richmond Orchestra is part of the Richmond Orchestra and Chorus Association and their Choral counterparts the Richmond Chorus will be performing their own “Christmas Is….” concert on Sunday, December 11th at the Richmond Pentecostal Church at 4:00pm, tickets for this event can be bought at the door.

November 2011
Testimonial from;
Kevin Ng
Soloist for Richmond Orchestra’s ”Rising Stars – Halloween Edition” performance.

Playing as a soloist with the Richmond Orchestra has been one of the highlights of my musical career. As a violinist, much of my repertoire is composed of concertos with orchestra. In performances and competitions, the orchestra part is always played by a pianist, but playing a concerto with a full orchestra has been a valuable and informative experience. With an orchestra, I was able to finally hear the concerto as it was supposed to sound, with the full instrumentation and powerful sound. It also helped me with my technical skills, providing me with an invaluable lesson in projection and how to ensure I could be heard above the orchestra the whole time. It was also great fun to work with a group of such dedicated musicians who really love the music. All the orchestra members were highly supportive and I could not have had a friendlier group of musicians to work with. James, the conductor, is a great musician and it was incredibly helpful to have such a friendly and responsive person and musician as my conductor.
Unfortunately, many young musicians never get the opportunity to perform as a soloist with orchestra and I count myself as very lucky to have had the chance to do so. Playing with an orchestra has helped me developed as a musician and performer, and I hope that other young musicians will get the opportunity to do so.
